Release of the Draft Guidelines for the Preparation of the Environmental Impact Statement regarding the OPG's Deep Geologic Repository for Low and Intermediate-Level Radioactive Wastes April 04, 2008 The Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency (the "Agency") and the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission released its Draft Guidelines for the Preparation of the Environmental Impact Statement for the Ontario Power General's proposal to prepare a site, construct and operate the Deep Geologic Repository to store low and Intermediate-level radioactive waste on the Bruce Nuclear Site, in the municipality of Kincardine (the "OPG's Deep Geologic Repository"). The draft Guidelines identify the information needed to examine the potential environmental effect of the OPG's Deep Geologic Repository and provide the public an opportunity to comment on such guidelines before being provided to OPG. The Agency and the Commission also released the draft Joint Review Panel agreement which provides a proposed time frame and procedure for conducting the environmental assessment and review panel hearing . There will be 3 members for each Panel - two appointed by the President of the CNSC and one appointed by the Minister of the Environment who will also serve as a temporary CNSC member. The Minister and the President of the CNSC must each give their respective approval to the other's selection. The OPG's Deep Geologic Repository would manage low and intermediate-level radioactive wastes, produced from the continued operation of OPG-owned nuclear plants at Bruce, Pickering and Darlington. Comments on the Draft Guidelines must be received by the Agency by June 18, 2008. To access the guidelines please click here. To access the Joint Panel agreement click here. |
